Bosch Fridge Not Making Ice: The E2 Code, the Filter and the App

Bosch ice makers stop for oddly specific reasons: a fresh water filter that trapped an air lock, an E2 code pointing at the ice maker's own sensor, a water valve that feeds the dispenser but not the ice maker - and on the newest 800 Series, an ice maker that only switches on through the Bosch app. Here is what each one looks like, and which you can fix yourself.

No Ice, Explained

Bosch Ice Makers: Four Ways They Quit

Bosch French door refrigerator after a water filter change

It Stopped Right After a Filter Change

The most common Bosch ice maker call we see: new filter goes in, ice stops. An air lock in the line, a filter that is not fully seated, or a dispenser that works while the ice maker starves. Flush a few quarts through the dispenser and re-seat the filter first - if ice is not back within a day, the problem moved past the filter.

Bosch refrigerator with working water dispenser but no ice production

Water Works, but No Ice

The dispenser pours fine, the tray stays empty. The ice maker has its own fill circuit - a separate valve outlet that opens for seconds at a time. We catch the moment power is sent to that valve and see whether water actually moves; the arm can turn and the unit can hum and still never take a drop.

Bosch refrigerator display showing the E2 error code

E2 on the Display

E2 points at the ice maker and its temperature sensor - the sensor sits on the ice maker itself, and if the compartment runs warm the unit refuses to cycle. We measure the actual compartment temperature before condemning parts, and on the 800 Series we know about the service kit Bosch issued for exactly this unit.

Bosch 800 Series refrigerator with app-controlled ice maker

The On Switch Nobody Can Find

On new Bosch fridges the freezer ice maker has a physical button - but the one in the fridge compartment switches on only through the Home Connect app, over WiFi. We have met more than one 'broken' ice maker that was simply never turned on. Check the app before you book anyone, including us.

Bosch Ice Maker FAQ

Bosch Ice Maker Questions

Why has my Bosch refrigerator stopped making ice?

+
The usual four: a water filter change that trapped an air lock, the fill valve not feeding the ice maker, the E2 sensor fault, or - on new 800 Series units - an ice maker that was never switched on in the app. The good news: two of those four cost you nothing to fix.

How do you reset a Bosch ice maker?

+
There is no dedicated reset button on most models - power the fridge down at the breaker for five minutes and back up. The freezer ice maker has its own on/off; the fridge-compartment one on new models is controlled in the Home Connect app. If a reset brings ice back for only a day or two, the underlying fault is still there.

Water dispenser works but there is no ice. Why?

+
Because they are fed separately. The valve has more than one outlet, and the ice maker's side can fail while the dispenser side pours perfectly. The ice maker can even cycle its arm and hum - and never receive a drop of water.

The ice stopped after I changed the water filter. Coincidence?

+
No - it is the single most common trigger we see on Bosch. Flush several quarts through the dispenser to purge air, pull and re-seat the filter, and give it 24 hours. If ice is still not back, the fill side needs a real diagnosis.

What does the E2 error mean on a Bosch fridge?

+
E2 flags the ice maker and its temperature sensor. The sensor lives on the ice maker itself, so the fix ranges from a sensor to the whole unit - and Bosch issued a service kit for some 800 Series fridges with exactly this fault. We measure before we replace.

How much does an ice maker repair cost?

+
The visit is $150 in Manhattan and $100 in Brooklyn, applied to the repair if you go ahead. Bosch ice maker parts are on the affordable side, and you will know the full price before we start any work.

The cubes come out tiny, hollow or crushed-only. Same problem?

+
Small or hollow cubes mean the ice maker is not getting enough water - low fill pressure, a scaled valve or a pinched line. Crushed-only with no cubes points at the dispenser door and auger side instead. Different paths, both fixable.

Is this the same on Thermador refrigerators?

+
Yes - Thermador refrigerators share the Bosch platform: same ice makers, same sensors, same E2 behavior. Everything on this page applies to Thermador too.
