Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error: Water in the Base Pan

E15 means water has collected in the base pan under the tub, and the anti-flood system has locked the machine - the drain pump keeps running until that pan is dry. It is not always a serious leak: suds or a small overflow can trigger the same code. Here is how to tell the difference, and what we fix when it keeps coming back.

The E15 Error, Explained

Bosch E15: Why It Shows Up and Why It Comes Back

What E15 Actually Means

A float switch sits in the base pan under the tub. When water collects there, the float rises, the control locks the cycle and runs the drain pump nonstop - that is why an E15 machine keeps humming even with the door open. The code will not clear until that pan is dry. The display is doing its job: somewhere, water went where it should not.

The 45-Degree Tilt - When You Can Fix It Yourself

Cut power, pull the unit out and tilt it forward about 45 degrees - the trapped water runs out of the pan, and once it dries the code clears. If E15 was triggered by suds or a one-time overflow, that is the whole fix and you do not need us. If water is back in the pan within days, you have an active leak - tilting again just resets the clock.

Technician checking an open Bosch dishwasher control panel

The Cracked Inlet Valve - the Classic Bosch Leak

When a Bosch leaks, the water inlet valve is the usual suspect - the plastic valve body develops a hairline crack and seeps a little water each cycle. We see it week after week. One catch on newer Bosch and Thermador machines: the valve comes as one assembly with the supply hose, and the wrong substitute part just moves the leak.

A Few Tablespoons and No Visible Leak

The most frustrating E15: a little water in the pan, everything bone dry when you look. A slow seep from the rear of the housing, a tired pump seal or foam from a sponge run through a cycle will do this - it only shows under a full hot cycle. So that is what we run, and we watch until the source gives itself away.

Bosch 800 Series & Benchmark

CrystalDry, top controls, panel-ready fronts. The quietest machines Bosch makes - which is why the first sign of trouble is often the E15 display, not a sound. We work around the cabinetry, not against it.

Older Bosch dishwasher with the door open during service

Bosch Ascenta & Older Models

Ascenta and earlier SHE3AR-era machines - some of them have no float pan at all, so E15 points elsewhere. Knowing which design you own is half the diagnosis, and we know both.

Panel-ready dishwasher integrated into custom cabinetry

Thermador Dishwashers

Thermador dishwashers are built on the Bosch platform - same E15 code, same base pan, same valve. If your Sapphire or Emerald is flashing E15, everything on this page applies to it too.

What NYC Customers Say

★★★★★

The broken cable that controls the door's opening was replaced, so now it opens gently instead of flopping all the way open. I love my Bosch dishwasher.

I felt well informed throughout the dishwasher repair process and the price was fair. Called and someone picked up, a technician was available the same day, and I got alerts when they were on the way.

Bosch E15 FAQ

Bosch E15 Questions

Can I fix the E15 error myself?

+
Sometimes. If suds or a one-time overflow tripped it, the 45-degree tilt drains the pan and the code clears for good. If E15 returns within days or weeks, something is leaking - and finding a slow leak inside a built-in machine is the part that takes a technician.

Does the E15 error always require a repair?

+
No. A good share of E15 calls end with drained suds and advice, not parts. The honest test is time: if the pan stays dry after a tilt, you are done. If water keeps coming back, a seal or valve is failing and a reset will not change that.

How do I clear the E15 code on my Bosch dishwasher?

+
There is no button combination that clears E15 while water sits in the base pan. Dry the pan - tilt the unit about 45 degrees - then restore power. The machine resets itself once the float drops.

Why won't my Bosch turn off? The pump just keeps running.

+
That is E15 by design - the drain pump runs to protect your floor until the pan is dry, even with the door open. If the noise is driving you crazy, cut power at the breaker. It is safe, and it does not erase anything we need for diagnosis.

What does Watertap or E15 with a dry tub mean?

+
The Watertap / AquaStop warning is the supply-side cousin of E15 - the machine thinks water is not coming in safely. It can appear with a completely dry tub and a clean filter. Usually the inlet valve or supply line, not the pump.

How much does an E15 repair cost?

+
The visit is $150 in Manhattan and $100 in Brooklyn, applied to the repair if you go ahead. Most E15 jobs come down to an inlet valve or a seal plus a proper dry-out, and you will know the full price before we start any work.

The pan was dry and E15 still came back a week later. Why?

+
That is the slow-seep scenario - a hairline crack or tired seal that only leaks under a full hot cycle. A quick look will not catch it. We run the machine through a real cycle and watch it until the source shows itself.

Is E15 the same on Thermador dishwashers?

+
Yes. Thermador dishwashers share the Bosch platform, so the code, the base pan and the usual causes are identical. Everything on this page - including the 45-degree tilt - applies to Thermador too.

Leak & Protection

E15Water in the base pan - float tripped, pump runs nonstop until the pan is dry
WatertapAquaStop supply-side warning - can appear with a dry tub and clean filter; valve or supply line, rarely the pump
E17Fill / water-level fault - likes to show up right after an inlet valve replacement
E14Flow sensor fault - the meter that counts water in; same AquaStop family

Drain Codes

E24Drain fault - air gap, check valve or pump; sometimes the board blocks a healthy-looking pump. Full E24 drain guide
E25Drain pump blocked or pump cover loose - the pump tries in short bursts, then gives up

Power & Controls

E01Control module fault - we see it on machines that had a leak first; water and boards do not mix
E20Circulation motor circuit - a resistance test tells whether it is the motor or the board before anything gets replaced
E09Heating element fault - in hard-water NYC apartments limescale takes the heater out early

Seeing E24, E25 or a code that is not here? Don't keep restarting the cycle - call with the code and your model number, and we come prepared.
