Bosch Dishwasher Not Draining: E24, E25 and Standing Water

E24 and E25 both mean one thing: the machine cannot move water out. Nine times out of ten the advice you will read is 'clean the filter' - and sometimes that really is the whole fix. This page is about the other times: the check valve, the air gap, the hose under the sink, and the pump the control board refuses to run even though everything looks clean.

E24 & E25, Explained

Bosch Not Draining: The Filter Is Only Chapter One

Bosch dishwasher tub with the filter and sump area visible

Clean the Filter the Right Way

Twist the filter counter-clockwise, lift it out, rinse it, and check the sump underneath for glass and food bits. Then make sure the white pump cover snaps back in - a loose cover alone will throw E24. Run a rinse cycle. If the water leaves, you are done and you did not need us.

E24 With No Blockage - Our Specialty

You cleaned the filter, the hose looks clear, and E24 still comes back. This is the call we get most. The real causes live deeper: a stuck check valve behind the pump, a clogged air gap by the faucet, a hose kinked under the sink - or a pump that spins but tests out of spec, so the board refuses to trust it and blocks the drain.

E25: The Pump Cover and the Impeller

E25 points at the drain pump itself: the white cover popped loose or something is jamming the impeller. The telltale sound is the pump trying in short bursts - a second of hum, a stop, another try - then giving up. Sometimes it is a shard of glass; sometimes the pump is done. We tell you which before replacing anything.

Drains on Cancel, but Not During the Cycle

A strange one we see on Bosch machines: hold Cancel and the water rushes out fine, but every cycle still ends with standing water. The pump is healthy - the control logic or the door latch is cutting the drain short. No amount of filter cleaning fixes that, and it is exactly the kind of fault that takes test-mode diagnosis.

Every Bosch Dishwasher We Repair

Bosch bar-handle dishwasher installed in a white kitchen

Bosch 300 & 500 Series

The workhorses - SHE, SHS and SHX models with bar or pocket handles, running in kitchens all over Brooklyn and Manhattan. Same base pan, same float switch, same E15 behavior across the range.

Bosch 800 Series & Benchmark

CrystalDry, top controls, panel-ready fronts. The quietest machines Bosch makes - which is why the first sign of trouble is often the E15 display, not a sound. We work around the cabinetry, not against it.

Older Bosch dishwasher with the door open during service

Bosch Ascenta & Older Models

Ascenta and earlier SHE3AR-era machines - some of them have no float pan at all, so E15 points elsewhere. Knowing which design you own is half the diagnosis, and we know both.

Panel-ready dishwasher integrated into custom cabinetry

Thermador Dishwashers

Thermador dishwashers are built on the Bosch platform - same E15 code, same base pan, same valve. If your Sapphire or Emerald is flashing E15, everything on this page applies to it too.

What NYC Customers Say

★★★★★

The broken cable that controls the door's opening was replaced, so now it opens gently instead of flopping all the way open. I love my Bosch dishwasher.

I felt well informed throughout the dishwasher repair process and the price was fair. Called and someone picked up, a technician was available the same day, and I got alerts when they were on the way.

Bosch E24 & E25 FAQ

Bosch Drain Questions

How do I force my Bosch dishwasher to drain?

+
Close the door and press and hold the Start button for about 3-5 seconds - on most models it doubles as Cancel and runs a drain-only sequence. If water still sits in the tub after that, the problem is physical: pump, valve or blockage.

Why is my Bosch not draining when there is no blockage?

+
Because not every blockage is visible. The check valve behind the pump, the air gap at the sink and the loop of hose under the counter are all out of sight. And sometimes there is no blockage at all - the pump's resistance drifts out of spec and the control board simply refuses to run it.

Why is there water in the bottom after every cycle?

+
A little moisture around the sump is normal for Bosch. A puddle you can scoop out is not - that is a drain that quit partway, and E24 usually follows within a cycle or two.

Is E24 a pump problem?

+
Sometimes, but not usually. E24 just means 'water did not leave' - the pump is one suspect among the filter, the check valve, the air gap and the hose. E25 is the code that points at the pump itself.

I cleaned the filter and E24 came back. Now what?

+
Stop cleaning - it is not the filter. Recurring E24 after a proper cleaning means the fault is in the part of the path you cannot reach: the valve, the air gap, the hose routing or the pump's electrical health. That is a visit, not another YouTube evening.

How much does a drain repair cost?

+
The visit is $150 in Manhattan and $100 in Brooklyn, applied to the repair if you go ahead. Most drain jobs come down to a pump, a check valve or a proper line cleaning - you will know the exact price before we start.

My brand-new Bosch shows E24. Is it defective?

+
Usually not. On new installs E24 is almost always the drain hose: no high loop, a kink behind the machine, or the knockout plug still sitting in the garbage disposal connection. Ten minutes of re-routing fixes most of them.

Is this the same on Thermador dishwashers?

+
Yes - Thermador shares the Bosch platform, so E24, E25 and the whole drain path behave the same way. Everything on this page applies to Thermador too.

Bosch Codes That Travel With E24

Drain & Family

E24Water did not leave - filter, check valve, air gap, hose, or a pump the board will not run
E25Drain pump blocked or the white pump cover is loose - short bursts of humming, then silence
No codeOlder models just stop with standing water and no display hint - same drain path, same diagnosis
E22Residual water at the end of the cycle - close cousin of E24, usually the filter or sump area

Leak & Protection

E15Water in the base pan - the anti-flood system, a different fault with its own page
WatertapAquaStop supply-side warning - the water coming in, not going out; valve or supply line

Power & Controls

E01Control module fault - we see it on machines that had a leak first; water and boards do not mix
E20Circulation motor circuit - a resistance test tells whether it is the motor or the board before anything gets replaced
E09Heating element fault - in hard-water NYC apartments limescale takes the heater out early

Seeing E15 instead? That is the anti-flood system, not the drain - we wrote a separate guide for it: Bosch E15 error guide
